Robert Sola is one of the leading attorneys in the field of credit reporting, credit disputes and credit errors. He has been litigating cases under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FRCA) for 12 years. His success in going to trial against the credit reporting agencies is unique. He has obtained the largest verdicts on record against each of the three national agencies: Trans Union, Equifax and Experian. He has also obtained large settlements in those cases that did not go to trial.
In 1998, he obtained an $800,000 judgment against TRW (now known as Experian). This continues to be the largest verdict ever obtained against TRW/Experian.
In 2002, Mr. Sola was lead counsel in Thomas v. Trans Union, which went to trial in Portland, Oregon. The result was, and remains, the largest verdict ever awarded under the Fair Credit Reporting Act – $5.3 million. This consisted of $300,000 for actual damages suffered by the consumer and $5 million in punitive damages against Trans Union.
In 2005, Mr. Sola went to trial against Equifax. He obtained a judgment of $420,000.
In 2007, Mr. Sola took another case against Equifax to trial, Angela Williams v. Equifax. This trial was in Orlando, Florida. The jury rendered a verdict of $219,000 in actual damages and $2.7 million in punitive damages. This is the largest verdict against Equifax.
In addition to the credit bureaus, Mr. Sola has successfully pursued cases, and received substantial settlements, against banks, credit card companies, mortgage lenders, and collection agencies. He has a national practice and has represented consumers across the country.
Most of the cases handled by Mr. Sola involve ongoing or repeated credit report errors that the consumer cannot get corrected despite sending credit report dispute letters to the credit reporting agencies and creditors. These cases often arise from identity theft or the mixing of files belonging to different consumers. In such cases, there are typically numerous violations of the FCRA, and the consumer is best served by retaining an attorney experienced in FCRA litigation. Credit repair and credit restore companies are usually ineffective in these situations, and can be expensive.
Mr. Sola takes all his cases on a contingent fee basis, so the consumer does not pay a fee unless there is a monetary recovery.
Mr. Sola was named Trial Lawyer of the Year in 2003 by the National Association of Consumer Advocates.
Mr. Sola’s offices are in Portland, Oregon. He has successfully represented consumers from all parts of Oregon, including Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, Beaverton and the following counties: Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Marion, Lane, Yamhill, Polk, Klamath and Deschutes. He has also represented residents of Vancouver, Washington, and several other states.
Mr. Sola is a regular speaker on identity theft and credit reporting litigation for various state bar organizations, the National Consumer Law Center and the National Association of Consumer Advocates.
